History
Kev Hawkins lead a rather uneventful life, with no money, no proper education and no significant other. Lacking direction, Kev joined up with the British Army. It turned out that Kev was rather good at being a soldier and he enjoyed his time, until one day a man caught Kev in bed with his wife. This man later turned out to be Kev's commanding officer. After the man made Kev pay by putting him on any humiliating assignment and giving him the blame for everything that went wrong in the camp, Kev had enough and joined up with the SAS, the only place his commanding officer couldn't reach him. Motivated by his desire to escape, Kev finished the SAS training and was assigned to various missions.
During missions in Northern Ireland, he had to kill both members of the IRA and the Ulster Defense Association, which meant that assassins from both movements wanted revenge for the rest of his life. Every few weeks or so, Kev gets attacked by a former terrorist, but mostly escapes unscathed, because his assassins tend to suffer strokes from bad luck or take each other out.
Another mission in the jungle, had his friend Danny killing an elephant. Danny, a hardened SAS-member, had emotional trouble after killing the elephant and when they later stumbled upon a baby tiger, Danny couldn't obey the order to kill it (as the mother had died, they thought that the baby had no chance of survival on its own). Instead Danny hid it in his backpack and took it home.
A few years later, Kev was promoted and given the command over his first operation: protecting a cabinet minister. The cabinet minister in question wanted his SAS bodyguards to find him a prostitute, otherwise he would have them fired. Kev complied and the group decided to take him to Danny's house, the only suitable location. When one of his men saw suspicious movement, Kev was alerted. He grabbed the minister and locked him inside the basement... the same basement where Danny had hidden his now full-grown tiger. While the suspicious movement only turned out to be tabloid reporters, the tiger ate the cabinet minister. Kev was held responsible, but he did help Danny and his tiger to escape before questioning.
From now on, Kev had to do every assignment no one else would do. Any complaints from his part, only would require his superior officer to mention "the thing with the tiger" and he knew he had no choice but to obey.
Kev got assigned the mission to kill the Authority. His boss told him that they had become a liability, handed him an old gun and a special badge that would allow him to teleport to the Carrier. When the Authority saw the scrawny man with an old gun there to assassinate them, they thought it was a joke and laughed at him. The joke soon was over when the gun turned out to be capable of killing even the invulnerable Apollo and surprised the Midnighter by having more bullets than a gun that size should have. Kev killed the entire Authority by himself against all odds, but then turned around to see an alien invasion heading for the planet. His boss appeared to him and unmasked herself as an alien as well, revealing the set-up. The Carrier, the Authority's intelligent ship, then contacted Kev. The Carrier and Kev had a conversation where Kev tried to defend humanity. In the end the Carrier returned time to before the moment Kev had killed the Authority. He now warned the Authority instead of the alien invasion and they defeated the aliens without any problems. Kev tried to get away, posing as just an amateur astronomer noticing the invasion, when the Engineer saw the Carrier's memory files. Kev begged and lied and for a moment it seemed like he would escape unscathed, but an ill-placed joke to Apollo and the Midnighter, about them being gay, earned him the beating of a life-time and Kev ended up in hospital.
The Authority was later forced to contact Kevin again: it turned out the cabinet minister that was eaten, was in fact an alien named B'eeef, who was wanted by the Rakulai, an alien race so advanced they were more than a match for the Authority. Kev had to take them to the place they dumped what was left of the cabinet minister's digested body as it could regrow itself from a single cell. It had regrown to a head and even worse, reanimated all the other bodies in the swamp it was lying as zombies. Kev, his friends, Apollo and the Midnighter defeat the zombies and retrieve the head, but Kev makes another attempt on the Authority's life (this time inadevertantly when he disposes of a powerful bomb by the only means available, through the open Door leading to the Carrier and the Authority). In the end Kev and the Authority part again, not friends, but not really enemies either.
When a mysterious creature appears on the Carrier and takes out the members of the Authority by throwing pies at their faces, Midnighter manages to defeat it, by opening an airlock. He himself teleports away and crashes on Earth in Great Britain, heavily wounded. He sends out a request to the SAS to have Kev bring him in. Kev reluctantly goes, but is double crossed by his friend Mick, who was shadowing him. Midnighter had expected this and gives Kev a file and a password. Kev may not like the Midnighter, but he does have his own code of honor and investigates the file, discovering that children are secretly being transformed into superhumans by the British government. Kev goes to save the Midnighter (whose superhuman DNA is necessary for the transformation process) and the children. At the secret hospital, Kev encounters Mick and is shocked to hear that Mick doesn't care about any of this or even about the recent death of their mutual friend, Tiny. Kev kills Mick in a rage and when his boss enters, he shoots her too when she commands the Midnighter and children to be killed. Kev escapes with the Midnighter and the children, now a wanted man. They leave the kids (unbearable brats) at an orphanage. They return to the Carrier to defeat the creature, a result of a computer virus that was placed in the Carrier when the Midnighter investigated the program that was turning children into superhumans. The creature appears and Midnighter orders the Carrier to purge the virus from its memory. The creature then transforms into Froggett, a man who usually gets rid of the bodies Kev makes. Froggett was using the Carrier's own systems to transform himself in a creature capable of defeating the Authority. Kev and Froggett have a long history of mutual loathing and Kev offers to torture Froggett for the Authority and afterwards he throws him out of an airlock. Kev returns to London to have a last drink before starting life on the run.
