History
The Golden Age Heap debuted in Hillman Periodicals' Air Fighters #3, dated December, 1942. The Heap was formerly one Baron von Emmelman, a World War I German flying ace who was shot down in 1918 over a Polish swamp. He arose from the muck decades later as The Heap and met Air Fighters lead character Skywolf. The Heap re-appeared every few months and eventually received a back-up series in the book, by then re-titled Airboy Comics. That series continued until May, 1953.
In 1986, Eclipse Comics began publishing a new Airboy comic and included The Heap as a supporting character. The Heap also appeared in the Eclipse title The New Wave, where he was considered by some members of that group to himself be a member. Eclipse Comics went bankrupt and ceased operations in the 1990s.
Following the bankruptcy of Eclipse, Todd McFarlane purchased the company's assets. He re-imagined The Heap as a bum by the name of Eddie Beckett. Beckett was murdered after finding a bag of necroplasm (a hellborn substance which Spawn's body is comprised of). While dying, the necroplasm reacted with his body, causing the earth and trash around him to collect and meld with his dying body. Upon dying, the corpse continued to form into the walking titan known as the Heap. He has fought with Spawn on two occasions at the behest of The Keeper (an incarnation of the Man of Miracles). Each time, the Heap has literally swallowed and engulfed Spawn, sending him to the mysterious Greenworld, a dimensional representation of nature.
